Julia Fish Photo Essay

Artist Julia Fish has an exhibit currently up for viewing at the DePaul Art Museum. The exhibition is titled, “Julia Fish: bound by spectrum.” All photos were taken by Olivia Wageman on February 12, 2020.

Thresholds from Fish’s house were a core focus in her exhibit. She wanted to explore the threshold between abstraction and representation in creating this exhibit.
Tour host Megan Lopez explains the context of Fish’s work. The main theme for Fish is her own house incorporating colors, materials, and floor plans from her home into her art.
Lopez described this piece as “her most political work.” Lopez said that Fish has explained that one side was America before the 2016 election and one side is after, but let the tour viewers decide which side was which.
The number six is also an important theme because of the color wheel which has six colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet and the hexagon which has six sides.
Lopez encourage the tour viewers to imagine what room Fish was trying to depict with each piece of art. This reminded some of a living room near the front of the house with lots of natural sunlight.
One of the viewers gets a closer look.
Other tour members discuss the Fish’s metaphors and wonder what her house actually looks like based on what she has depicted.
The soft light that came in made the DePaul Art Museum feel soft and safe, just like home.
